The Beer Runner gets Porn-ographic

I guess I should clear something up first: This is a blog about a guy named Porn.

Jeff Porn.

“To this day,” says Porn, “I still get the biggest kick out of seeing the look on someone’s face the first time they hear it.”

Oh yes, that is his real name. And Google hits to this blog just increased by like 50 fold.

“I wouldn’t trade it for anything,” Porn says. “I’ve always had a lot of fun with it, especially once I was old enough to understand what porn was.”

I met Porn through Twitter — which has a burgeoning craft beer community — and surprisingly he wasn’t one of those porn spammers. Now I’ve interviewed dudes named Beers and Porn. I don’t even know what could be next.

ANYWAY, turns out that Porn is really into craft beer and hiking. Who would have known that Porn fell into the Beer Runner category?

So let’s talk Porn! (It never gets old.)

You recently hiked the Arapaho Glacier after a long night of drinking. What were you having?

I was at Left Hand Brewing for a beer release party. One of the members of my home brew club, The Indian Peak Alers, won the Pro-Am homebrew competition and they had a party to release her beer. Of course when you go to these things you can’t just have one. The problem is that it seems whenever I have a hike planned I end up going out for beers the night before, which of course makes the first hour or so of the hike less enjoyable. Starting a hike hung over and dehydrated — especially in Colorado at the higher altitudes — is not something I recommend.

What’s your favorite hike you’ve finished this year?

I have to say that the hike up Mt. Audubon was my favorite so far. I did that hike in early June so there was still a lot of snow, which was a first for me. I had never hiked in snow before. The snow became so deep that eventually the trail disappeared and I ended up making my own way, which made it all that more exciting. I’d like to go back now that the snow is gone and do it again to compare. Come to think of it, I was out till about 3 a.m. having beers the night before that one as well.  Hiking a couple miles into the Grand Canyon wasn’t all that shabby either.

What about your favorite beer so far this year?

Boy that’s a tough one. I’ve had a lot of great beers this year so far. Two stick out. Ska Brewing did a barrel aged project where they split a batch of beer into 10 year and 20 year brandy barrels. The 20 year version was just amazing, very well balanced and super smooth to drink. The other is Brabant from Avery which is a dark ale soured and aged in Zinfandel barrels. Probably one of the best sour beers I’ve ever had.

How did you get into home brewing?

It was about 4 years ago, a good friend of mine, Frankie Majowich, had just came back from GABF where he spent some time talking to the folks from the AHA. I helped him brew a batch and haven’t looked back since. It’s something that I recommend anyone who enjoys craft beer give a shot at least once, although it’s very addicting so I don’t think you can brew only once. The greatest part is that you typically brew 5gal batches which allows you to experiment and make anything you’d like.

You have tickets for Flying Dog’s Gonzo Fest. What are you most looking forward to?

Anyone who knows me, knows that I’m a huge fan of Flying Dog. The thing that drew me to them — other than the great beers — was their laid-back let’s-drink-a-shitload-of-beer-and-have-a-good-time attitude. Living up to the image of Hunter S. Thompson is no easy task, but they do a damn good job. So I’m really looking forward to hanging out with friends, meeting a lot of great people and of course drinking a shitload of great beer. It will also be my first trip to the new brewery. Maybe they will let me run around and get into some trouble.

Anything else to add?

Get out there and promote beer whenever you can, and support your local brewery. Oh, and if you haven’t heard.
